Energy performance evaluation of a building-plant system monitored by Cheonix with energy signature

Case History of a building-plant system located at IVREA (ITALY) monitored from 2014. Evaluation of the building-plant system performances at the end of the thermal season 2016/2017 based on actual consumption seasonally adjusted from external temperature.

The evaluation method used, involves the use of energy signature as a performance indicator: data obtained from the plant and sent by the Cheonix telemetry system, were stored and processed through the MDM web portal and then represented in energy signature graph.

The comparison of the effective performance of “operating energy signature” with the expected performance of “project energy signature”, reveals the real efficiency achieved downstream of retraining and new management.

Instead, the comparison of data recorded in two thermal seasons 2015/2016 and 2016/2017, reveals the plant performances year by year.


Evaluation result 

From the evaluation it was possible to identify very important energetic and behavioral aspects:

  • The achieved efficiency was optimal because operating signature is parallel to the project signature;
  • Users have reduced the average internal temperature of 1.2°C over the previous year, probably motivated from the reduction of utilities accounting costs; however users still maintain an internal average temperature higher than project conditions;
  • It was detected a better conduction compared to the previous year, because current slope is lower than the previous one.

Technical detail of evaluation

The system monitors GAS REAL CONSUMPTION with Pulse-169 device connected to the gas meter and the average daily EXTERNAL TEMPERATURE detected by Pagoda-169 temperature sensor. The sensor is installed north of the building away from thermal effects of nearby bodies and it detect temperature continuously calculating the average of 24 hours;

Comparison A - between project signature and operating signature

Observing the two lines of the graph that represent project signature (the orange one) and operating signature (the grey one), it’s clear that they have a very similar inclination. This confirms that the energetic behavior of building-plant system reflects what was expected and calculated of project stage. Comparison B - between 2015/2016 and 2016/2017 seasons

Comparing the two lines, it emerges that the abscissas are very close, although during the just finished season, have been registered generator ignition temperatures of about 0.5°C lower. This result reveals that users have maintained thermostatic valves settings on average lower than the previous season. However...
